Job Description

Responsible for developing, maintaining, evaluating and organizing the medical record system for the hospital, assuring their adequacy for conformance with policies, rules and regulations. Has overall responsibility for ICD-10 (or current) diagnosis coding, patient accounts/benefits and hospital census statistics recording and reporting. Responsible for supervising daily operations, scheduling Medical Records and Switchboard staff and complete probationary and annual performance reviews. Writes and revises hospital policies/procedures applicable to assigned responsibilities. Represents the hospital as Site Lead for State of Michigan’s (SOM) Electronic Medical and Business Record System project. Works cooperatively with the other hospital Site Leads and Central Office project lead to ensure compliance with regulatory agency rules and accrediting body standards as they relate to medical records systems. Responsible for implementation and ongoing oversight of electronic medical record system and other electronic data collection and storage methods for the hospital.
Co-leader for data collection and reporting to National Research Institute (NRI) for ORYX reporting or other required data collection and reporting, as required by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commission.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of an associate’s degree in health information or medical record technology



Experience


Medical Record Examiner Supervisor 12
Four years of experience equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner, including two years equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner E10 or one year equivalent to a Medical Record Examiner Supervisor 11; or, five years of administrative support, supervisor experience maintaining medical record systems, monitoring the quality of medical record keeping and responding to requests for medical record information.

Additional Requirements and Information

Required: Certification by the American Health Information Management Association as a Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator.

Vacation and Sick Leave: Eligible full-time employees receive between 15 and 35 personal days and 13 sick days per year that may be rolled over to the following year if not used. Eligible employees also receive an additional day each year for community service or school functions.



Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees can take 12 weeks of paid leave immediately after a birth or adoption to allow needed time together at home with a new child.



Paid Holidays: Eligible employees receive 13 or 14 paid holidays each year including New Year’s Eve and Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving Friday, Christmas Eve and Day.



Bonus Programs: Eligible employees with five years of service also receive annual longevity bonuses that grow as seniority increases. Some positions also may qualify for recruitment, retention, and performance bonuses or other special pay premiums.



Military Pay Differential: Employees in the guard or reserves may also qualify for supplemental pay benefits if miliary pay during qualifying duty is less than normal state pay. Prior military service may also allow seniority credits to accelerate eligibility for longevity bonuses and additional personal leave accrual.
